Insein Prison special courts sentenced at least 17 members of National League for Democracy (NLD) party to up to 16 years imprisonment on Friday on charges ranging from involvement in public demonstrations, illegal assembly, resisting arrests and disturbing the public order.
On Thursday,Thant Zin Myo, San Win and Kyaw Soe Win were sentenced by the Hlaing Tharyar Township special court in Insein Prison to seven years imprisonment each under sections 143, 145, 147, 152 and 505(b) of the penal code.
On Friday, in the Kamaryut Township special court in Insein Prison, Thant Zin Myo and San Win were sentenced to an additional nine years and six months. Kyaw Soe Win received a seven year and six month sentence.
Thant Zaw Myint was sentenced to nine years and six months imprisonment, and Thike Min and Nge Ma were sentenced to seven years and six months in the Kamaryut Township special court.
Shwe Maung, Zaw Win and Wunn Aung from the Mandalay Division NLD party were sentenced to four years imprisonment each. Shwe Maung was imprisoned in 2002 for making a symbolic gold-coated copper hat, known as kha mauk, which was the emblem of NLD party when it won in the1990 elections. The hat is a recognized NLD symbol and was intended as a gift for NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Tin Myint, the chairman of Thaketa Township NLD party, was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment by the Tharkayta Township special court in Insein Prison.
Tin Win and Nyi Nyi Min, members of the South Dagon Township NLD party, were sentenced to two years imprisonment by the South Dagon Township special court in Insein Prison.
In sentences handed down by the Kyauktada Township special court in Insein Prison,
Nay Zar Myo Win, Kyaw Kyaw Linn, Aung Kyaw Oo, Kyaw Zin Win and Kyi Kyi Wah, all members of the youth wing of the Dawbon Township NLD, were sentenced to five years.
Kyaw Zin Win was given an additional 11 years on other charges, and his wife, Kyi Kyi Wah, was given an additional six years imprisonment. Kyaw Kyaw Lin was given an additional five year sentence on a charge of illegal migration.
